Interpreter – 口译员

在澳新职业大典中，口译员归属于2724社会科学专业人员职业小组下，与其他职业共用统一的详细职业描述。

• 通过查询信息来源（包括历史所以数据和目录，档案，法院记录，日志，报纸资料和其他材料）来收集历史数据；assembling historical data by consulting sources of information such as historical indexes and catalogues, archives, court records, diaries, newspaper files and other materials
• 组织，验证，评估和解读历史，政治，社会，考古学，人类学和语言学数据；organising, authenticating, evaluating and interpreting historical, political, sociological, archaeological, anthropological and linguistic data
• 进行人类活动的历史和文化研究，起草和提供研究结果；undertaking historical and cultural research into human activity, and preparing and presenting research findings
• 提供同步或交替口语翻译；providing simultaneous and consecutive verbal or signed renditions of speeches into another language
• 将目标语言以恰当的形式翻译，包括法院，医院，学校，工作单位和会议翻译；rendering the meaning and feeling of what is said and signed into another language in the appropriate register and style in a range of settings such as courts, hospitals, schools, workplaces and conferences

在实际的工作中，口译员主要负责口语或手语翻译工作：

• 通过电话或面对面听说话者说话，用要求的语言/手语重复所说的话；
• 同时翻译（说话时）或连续翻译（说话后）；
• 与旅游团或商务团体一起旅行，并担任口译；
• 查阅字典和其他参考资料，找到单词和术语的准确含义；
• 为不同类型的口译工作做准备的专门研究领域或课题。

要成为一名口译员，你必须精通两种或两种以上的语言。在新西兰，口译员的主要职业方向包括：

• Māori语口译员

如果你想成为一个Māori-English或English-Māori口译员，Māori语言委员会建议：

• 完成相关研究生学历，如怀卡托大学的毛利语言翻译研究生文凭；
• 并获得Māori语言委员会笔译员和口译员证书。

• 手语翻译员

要成为手语翻译，你需要：

• 良好的新西兰手语知识；
• 新西兰手语和英语口译学士学位或同等学历。

新西兰教育部提供专门的手语翻译奖学金。手语翻译人员还可以参加教育口译、聋人/盲人口译和最小语言技能口译（手语技能很少的聋人手语）的课程。

• 其他语言口译员

新西兰笔译和口译协会（NZSTI）提供了在新西兰可获得的学术课程列表。

以上口译翻译员方向所对应的课程包括：

某些语言或专业领域的技能可以增加找到口译工作的机会，总的来说工作机会一般，口译员需要具备以下知识:

• 英语和至少一种其他语言；
• 翻译对象的文化和习俗；
• 良好的英语听说读写能力；
• 口译员的道德准则；
• 不同的解释技术；
• 特定的专业术语（可能包括医疗、商业和法律术语）；
• Māori语言的知识对于口译员在新西兰也可能有用。

不过熟练Māori口译员在市场上属于短缺状态，需求是相对较高的。其他在新西兰需求量较大的语言还有:

• 新西兰手语；
• 普通话和广东话；
• 太平洋岛屿语言，尤指萨摩亚语和汤加语；
• 北印度语；
• 西班牙语。

口译员的工作机构主要包括：

• 私人口译和翻译业务；
• 翻译协会和理事机构；
• 国会和政府部门，如怀唐伊法庭；
• 学校、大学和社区教育中心；
• 医院；
• 警察，监狱和法院；
• 旅游大巴；
• 在剧院里，他们表演现场表演。

口译员的报酬取决于雇主，以及是随叫随到还是全职雇员。社区口译员一般每小时收费，而会议口译员每天或半天收费。大多数口译员靠这份工作挣的钱不够养活自己，还需要再找一份工作。口译员如果必须旅行，可以报销交通费。随叫随到的口译员或在正常办公时间以外工作的口译员通常收入较高。
