在澳新职业大典中，演员归属于2111演员、舞者以及其他表演艺人职业小组，与小组下其他职业共享以下详细职业描述：

• 阅读剧本、进行研究，以了解情节、故事主题和人物个性；reading scripts and undertaking research to gain understanding of parts, themes and characterisations
• 学习台词和线索，排练剧本情节，并应用声乐和动作技能以展现人物个性；learning lines and cues, rehearsing parts, and applying vocal and movement skills to the development of characterisation
• 在制作总监的指导和指导下，通过排练准备演出；preparing for performances through rehearsals under the instruction and guidance of production directors
• 在电影、电视、广播和舞台演出排练中扮演的角色；acting parts and portraying roles as developed in rehearsals in film, television, radio and stage productions
• 练习舞蹈动作，解读节目编排内容；practising dance routines and interpreting the choreographic content of the production

在实际工作中，演员的工作内容可包括：

• 为舞台、电影或电视表演中的角色试镜；audition for parts in performances on stage, in film or on television
• 学习剧本，研究角色和他们正在进行的项目；study scripts and research the character and project they’re working on
• 记忆和排练角色的台词、线索和肢体动作；memorise and rehearse their character’s lines, cues and physical movements
• 在观众面前或镜头前表演角色；act out the role for an audience or in front of a camera
• 在排练或观众面前即兴发挥角色的部分性格或行为；improvise parts of their character’s personality or actions during rehearsal or in front of an audience
• 若是特技演员，则在观众面前或镜头前表演特技。perform stunts for an audience or in front of a camera.

行业内，成为演员并没有任何特殊的学历要求。澳新职业大典则要求此职位的人，最低持有本科学历，比如表演艺术本科、戏剧本科等。

由于行业规模较小，且求职竞争激烈，在新西兰，演员的就业机会较少。拥有签约的经纪人将有助于找到工作机会。新西兰演员经纪人协会The Actors Agents Association of New Zealand提供有盛誉的经纪人清单。大多数情况下，演员另有其他工作作为收入的主要来源，比如媒体行业、商业、酒店行业或其他零售业等工作时间较为灵活的工作。此外，由于求职困难，许多演员会制作自己的表演项目，从政府机构或媒体公司申请补助或赞助，拍摄自己的电影、网络系列剧、或其他形式的表演作品。

演员的收入取决于个人能力、工作时间、项目规模等。一般情况下，由于表演机会不多、并不规律，新西兰的演员还需要其他收入来源以支持生活。
